Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) triggered FBI Director Kash Patel into a rage during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday when he pointed out that key agents working on important task forces involving terrorism and even child trafficking have been diverted to work instead on immigration matters.
Booker said that Patel has made the U.S. “less safe” — which sent Patel into a fury.
Patel employed a tactic during the hearing, objecting to the “premise” of the question whenever he chose not to answer, which Booker charged.
Booker ultimately told Patel, “I don’t think you’re long for your job.”
“I am not afraid of you!” Booker maintained.

The statement “Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious” is a quote by Oscar Wilde, suggesting that patriotism can be used by those with malicious intent to justify harmful actions, bigotry, and criminality under the guise of national pride. It critiques a fanatical and extreme form of patriotism, implying that those who are truly wicked may exploit national fervor to mask their own self-serving agendas or to incite violence and hatred against others.
Interpretation of the quote
- Exploitation by the wicked:
The quote implies that people who are inherently bad or “vicious” can feign patriotism to gain public support for their nefarious actions or to pursue their own interests at the expense of others.
- Justification for evil:
Wilde suggests that patriotism can become a convenient excuse for xenophobia, bigotry, and criminal acts, making them seem noble or patriotic when they are actually harmful.
- Critique of blind zealotry:
The statement is a caution against uncritical devotion to one’s country, encouraging a more discerning view of what constitutes true patriotism versus nationalistic fervor.

The Australian Federal Police investigate some of the country’s most serious crimes – terrorism, corruption, drugs, and human trafficking.
But a new report from the Commonwealth Ombudsman has found that the one thing the AFP is not good at investigating is itself.
The report has found that the agency is dismissing complaints that should be investigated, including allegations of corruption and assault within its own ranks.
